§ 8-268. Keeping of swine restricted.

  • It shall be unlawful to keep or maintain swine within the city, except for the following purposes, at the following locations, and upon the following conditions:

    (1)

    Swine may be present for exhibition at stock shows, fairs and circuses.

    (2)

    Swine may be located on or about the property of any vocational school with facilities properly constructed as determined by this section.

    (3)

    Swine may be present in slaughtering establishments.

    (4)

    Swine may be kept at the home of an FFA (Future Farmers of America) member under the supervision of a high school vocational agricultural teacher or of a 4-H member under the supervision of the Live Oak County agricultural agent, subject to the following conditions:

    a.

    The property upon which the FFA or 4-H member resides and maintains the swine shall be a minimum of one acre in area with a maximum of five swine animals.

    b.

    The minimum pen size shall be 625 square feet per swine weighing more than 50 pounds. The pen shall be covered with a roof having a minimum of 100 square feet per swine with a minimum pen width of 15 feet.

    c.

    Student members of FFA shall be under close supervision of a vocational agricultural teacher or the Live Oak County agricultural agent. If a member does not conform to city regulations, such advisor shall report the violation to the animal control officer, and the maintaining of swine at the location shall be terminated immediately, or as soon as is practicable.

    (5)

    All swine shall be grain fed.

    (6)

    Swine shall be watered by use of an automated watering system or similar equipment approved by the animal control officer. There shall be a slab of concrete or other solid type construction under any tank and covering an area of four feet in each direction from such tank.

    (7)

    Swine wallows are prohibited.

    (8)

    Any open and adjacent areas in and around swine pens shall be kept clean.

    (9)

    Any pen shall be a minimum of 150 feet from any dwelling or business building owned or occupied by any person other than the owner of the swine or person keeping and maintaining same.
